Course Descriptions

BMAS:  This course teaches the strategies, skills, and computer applications used to promote success within business organizations. It is an excellent choice for students pursuing an immediate position in the workforce or post secondary education. The course will include the following sections: advanced computer applications; applying problem solving skills and solutions in a business and management environment; and opportunities for students to participate in leadership activities such as those supported by Career and Technical Student Organizations such as DECA (also known as Delta Epsilon Chi on the college level). At the advanced level students will use business application software with emphasis on Microsoft Excel, Access, PowerPoint, FrontPage, PhotoDraw, Internet, Charting, and Desktop Publishing (scanners, digital cameras, and video. Dual enrollment credit (CIS 105) is available from Maricopa County Community Colleges.

Career Technology Foundations:  During the first half of the year students will use the computer to keyboard without looking at their fingers or keys. Students will also learn proper formatting for memorandums, personal and business letters, as well as short and long reports (term papers) using Microsoft Word. Desktop Publishin, PowerPoint, Checking, and Internet Navigation units will also be covered. The second half of the year will consists of Career Research and discovery while integrating previously learned skills to assist with Resumes, Ethics, and Character units. At the end of the year, student will have developed a 4 + year career plan and ongoing upateable portfolio.

Construction Tech 1:  Construction Technology is an active hands-on class intended to give the student an overview of the skills and opportunities available in the construction industry while focussing on framing and exterior home finishing. In addition, these skills will also enable the student to confidently tackle most household projects in the future. Because construction is rarely an individual activity, students will work primarily in small groups with limited direct instruction.

Construction Tech 2:  Construction Technology is an active hands-on class intended to give the student an overview of the skills and opportunities available in the construction industry while focussing on on interior finishing and design. In addition, these skills will also enable the student to confidently tackle most household projects in the future. Because construction is rarely an individual activity, students will work primarily in small groups with limited direct instruction.

Construction Tech 3:  Construction Technology is an active hands-on class intended to give the student an overview of the skills and opportunities available in the construction industry while focussing applying all of the skills they have learned in the program. In addition, these skills will also enable the student to confidently tackle most household projects in the future. Because construction is rarely an individual activity, students will work primarily in small groups with limited direct instruction.

Culinary Arts:  Students who complete this course will be prepared to work in the food industry or continue with post secondary education in a food related degree. There are many varied careers that are centered around food. But whether the student wants to work in the food industry or not, the concepts learned in Culinary Arts can be applied to everyday life or be used as a stepping stone to other avenues in life.

E-Commerce w/ HTML:  If students have ever thought of creating their own web page for themselves or to market something in the electronic/web based world this class is for them. Througout the course students will be instructed in the usage and implementation of Hyper Text Markup Language (HTML); the foundation of all web pages. Additionally throughtout this course students will be exposed to Marketing techniques and concepts that will enhance any web page/site geared toward the marketing of business products or online services. Also integrated througout the course will be Career and Technical Student Organizations concepts.

E-Commerce w/ Dreamweaver:  Students will continue to expand on their knowledge of HTML while adding additional skills to their web design toolbox of knowledge. Students will learn Dreamweaver - the professional software used throughout the webbing industry for preparing web sites. Students will also continue to learn about how the e-commerce marketing works by building several web pages for small businesses that will add to their portfolio. Also integrated throughout the course will be Career and Technical Student Organizations concepts.

Introduction Engineering:  Introduction to Engineering Design is an active hands-on class intended to introduce the student to the Design and Problem Solving Skills necessary to pursue Engineering or Technology related career. Because these careers require people to work with together, students will work primarily in small groups with limited direct instruction.

Professional Foods:  During the year students will cover many aspects of food and nutrition. They will begin with safety & sanitation and continue with units on nutrition, utensils, equipment, and cooking and preperation terms. Once these areas have been mastered they will study and experience, through labs, the entire food pyramid which includes meats, vegetables, fruits, breads, eggs, cheese, fats, etc. A unit almost always begins with a bookwork assignment, is reinforced through many hands-on activities, and culminates with a unit test. Videos, games, guest speakers and field trips are among some other learning activities they will be experiencing.

Sports & Entertainment Marketing:  This course is designed for students interested in sports, entertainment, and event marketing. Emphasis is placed on the following principles as they apply to the exciting world of marketing: branding, licensing, and naming rights; business foundations; concessions and on-site merchandising; economic foundations; promotion; safety and security; an human relations. Skills in communications, human relations, psychology, and mathematics are reinforced in this course. Work-based learning strategies appropriate for this course include cooperative education, paid/unpaid internships, or school-based enterprises. Marketing stimulations, projects, teamwork, DECA leadership activities, meetings, conferences, and competitions provide many opportunities for application of instructional competencies.

WHS Wranglers:  Students will continue to expand on their knowledge of HTML and Dreamweaver while adding additional skills to their web desing toolbox of knowledge. Students will continue to learn additional software associated with the Dreamweaver Suite - Flash and Fireworks. Students will also apply the e-commerce marketing knowledge learned in the past two years to the WHSWranglers.org web site. Students will work with clubs, athletics and academic areas of the school to promote what is happening at Wickenburg High School. Also integrated throughout the course will be Career and Technical Student Organizations concepts.
