Wickenburg English Department - English Language Development

English Language Development (ELD) classes are structured to teach language skills to students who are in the process of learning the English language.  ELD instruction focuses on pronunciation, structure, English word order rules, and how to use English in different situations and contexts.  ELD classes use the specific learning skills derived from the English Language Learner proficiency standards approved by the Arizona State Board of Education, synchronized with the Arizona Academic English Language Arts Standards.

Students who do not have a composite score of “proficient” on the Arizona English Language Learner Assessment (AZELLA) will be assigned to ELD classes. The Arizona English Language Learner Assessment (AZELLA) will be used to determine English proficiency and the correct placement in classes if a language other than English is indicated on the Home Language Survey.  AZELLA proficiency levels are 1) Pre-emergent, 2) Emergent, 3) Basic, 4) Intermediate and 5) Proficient.  Students who have an AZELLA score of Proficient are not placed in ELD classes.

Students who score at Basic or below on the AZELLA will be enrolled in the following classes: Conversational English and Academic Vocabulary, English Reading, English Writing, and English Grammar.

Students who score Intermediate on the AZELLA will be enrolled in the following classes:  Academic English Reading and Academic English Writing and Grammar.  All instruction and assessment is aligned to the K-12 Arizona English Language Learner Standards.
