In this course students will learn basic skills, terminology, techniques and an overview of theatre history. Lessons will be taught from our in class textbook, “Theatre-Art In Action”, as well as from lectures, class projects, guest speakers, individual assignments and even movies. This course will emphasize basic theatre skills that are useful in many different fields such as public speaking, quick thinking, collaboration, and self-confidence. Topics of study include Shakespearean sonnets, technical theatre, reader’s theatre, theatre games, monologues, and scene work. Students should expect to participate and to see personal growth: as much of the class will focus on being involved. Students will also be required to work on some aspect of a production in a non-performance role outside of class time. This will total six (6) hours per semester and there will be many opportunities to fulfill this requirement. Attendance at one performance per semester of the students choosing (subject to instructor approval) is also necessary.
